History of the district. A settlement becoming part of the city
Many modern districts were once settlements or villages. Everton is no exception. A few hundred years ago, there was an old settlement in the West Derby Hundred. By the end of the 18th century, it turned into the small rural parish of Walton-on-the-Hill. Meanwhile, Liverpool began to actively develop and its residents wanted to move to cosy Everton. Gradually, new houses began to appear there. The settlement became part of Liverpool in 1835.
In the 60s and 70s of the last century, the city authorities began clearing the territory. Thus, Everton Park was created. In the process, many houses were demolished and the landscape of the district changed. There are many fields and trees on the territory now. It should be noted that in the 1960s, the population of Everton decreased by 100,000 residents.
In 2017, the authorities tried to breathe new life into Everton. Therefore, they created a new district centre with a renewed Greatie market.
Everton’s attractions
Although there are many modern private houses in the area, Everton is considered a bad place to live. Still, there are several tourist locations that are worth visiting. One of them is Prince Rupert’s Tower. It is located in the district centre and is known as a symbol of Everton Football Club. Its construction history began in 1787. At first, petty criminals and drunkards were kept in this tower. Usually, they didn’t stay for long there and were judged the very next day. In 1938, the emblem of Everton Football Club was designed. Interestingly, its central element was Prince Rupert’s Tower. That is why this object is a symbol of the club. In 1997, the football club even allocated funds to reconstruct the tower.
In addition, there is St George’s Church, a library and a water pump tower. By the way, Everton Water Tower is quite an interesting object in terms of architecture. It is surrounded by modern houses and consists of three levels. The first and second contain 12 arches each and the third is a water tank with iron support brackets. The water tower was built in 1857 and became an architectural monument. However, this didn’t stop United Utilities from putting it up for sale. They motivated their decision by the fact that the tower didn’t operate for many years. A year later, the water tower was put up for auction again and sold for £70,000. It was planned to place apartments there, but that was never realised.
At first, the local football club was called St. Domingo. Later, it was renamed. It should be noted that Everton F.C. have never played in this district of Liverpool.
Several educational institutions operate in the area. These are Beacon Church of England Primary, Notre Dame Catholic College, Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary and Whitefield Primary School.
