This building is a jewel in the crown of Liverpool’s business district, located in the heart of Old Hall Street. It offers over 400,000 square feet of stylish business space. Among Liverpool’s office complexes, The Capital Building is unrivalled in size. The building, which we’ll discuss in more detail on liverpool-future.com, is incredibly beautiful, combining well-placed historical details with modern solutions. It fits harmoniously into the architectural ensemble of the surrounding area. Let’s talk about the history and design features of The Capital Building.
Figures and facts to be proud of
“State-of-the-art facilities, top-notch amenities and services…”
“A place where you can focus on work…”
These marketing slogans are all too familiar to anyone looking for office space for their company. However, the facts and figures can often be far more impressive and convincing.
- The building was completed in 1976 as a purpose-built headquarters for Royal Insurance and was opened by Princess Alexandra. Since then, it has been renovated and refurbished multiple times to meet modern demands.
- The building stands 73 metres tall, and as of February 2025, its floor area is almost 40,000 sq m.
- The Capital Building was one of the first in the city to install an energy management system that tracks 1,800 efficiency metrics.
What visitors find most impressive is the stunning glass atrium, which floods the entrance with natural light. The space offers everything a business environment could need: social areas, informal meeting spots, a cafe, an exhibition area, and, of course, commercial space.
Renovation and redevelopment
The constant evolution of technology requires upgrading equipment and carrying out major or minor refurbishments. Often, even the interior design needs to be updated and made more vibrant. Here are the highlights of one of these renovations:
- Over 15,000 sq ft of the business centre was equipped with Grade A lighting to create a modern, dynamic working environment.
- The building fully complies with the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and is designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. Everything has been considered, including raised floors, entrance ramps, 24/7 access, and an essential underground car park. Some apartments even have their own private outdoor terrace for residents.
- The office spaces have a modern design with panoramic glazing, energy-efficient LED lighting, VRF cooling systems, and exposed services, creating a spacious and bright atmosphere.
- The wellness area is being expanded, as creating a comfortable space for relaxation is considered just as important as a convenient work area.

A lot has also been done for the convenience of visitors. For example, a reception desk, social areas, a bar/cafe, workspaces, and a wellness zone have been added. The Brutalist exterior is now complemented by a modernised interior.
10th-floor renovation
Another renovation focused on the 10th floor. It has been refurbished with an emphasis on modern style and maximising natural light. The designers’ idea was to ensure that nothing obstructed the breathtaking views of the city. There were many changes, including:
- An improved heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, and redesigned office spaces.
- Installation of new fire protection systems, including curtains, Category B electrical and mechanical systems, and all power and lighting systems.
- Restored ceilings, new carpets, and a complete redecoration.
More renovations are planned for the adjacent 9th and 11th floors, as well as the ground floor.
The Capital Building offers some of the most cost-effective and efficient office spaces in the UK. It’s an almost perfect professional hub for networking.
